High Stakes and Heavy Hearts

Marcy and I left the restaurant, and as Marcy called JJ for a pickup, I dialed Detective Li. “We’re on for tomorrow. But we’ll need six hundred and fifty thousand.”

“I don’t know, Mancuso,” said Li.

“Is either that in cash or six hundred in Bitcoin.”

“Well, I meant I don’t know about the whole thing. This is happening too fast to set up, and frankly, Captain Daily is having second thoughts about using the two of you. This is way beyond consulting and protocol.”

“For heaven’s sake, Li, how can we worry about protocol now when we’re on the verge of bringing down a big dog in the drug business and possible connection to a terror attack? Brother, we are almost there.”

“I’ll run it by Daily and get back to you,” Li said.

Twenty minutes later, Li called as we approached the office. “Mancuso, can you meet us at the precinct now?”

I redirected JJ to drive us to the Midtown South precinct.

Once there, we met at Daily’s office. Li, Daily, and we were introduced to Juan Castillo, a DEA agent with whom the NYPD coordinated all drug-related issues.

Castillo was friendly, outgoing, and happy to be on the verge of nailing wanted Montes. He didn’t show any concern for our involvement. He didn't care about us because he thought Marcy and I were seasoned professionals. He wanted Montes at any cost. This careless attitude concerned me, but I wasn’t sharing with Marcy my thoughts about Castillo.

“Tell me about your conversation with Montes,” Castillo asked.

I went on detailing everything we discussed, our faked identities, and the possible connection to an attack on the city.

“We’ll provide the money, and my people, together with Captain Daily’s people,” he said, looking at Daily, “we’ll back you up. Montes is likely to call you with instructions for the exchange, and we’ll be ready. Both of you will be wired, and we’ll place a monitoring device in a duffle bag with the money. Are we clear?”

“No wires,” I said. “They already checked for that today. We can’t take a chance.

Daily said, “Joey, we need the wire for your protection.”

“No, you need the wire for court purposes. If you can hide it properly in the duffle bag, do that. But not on us,” I said. “And further, I’ll be the one delivering the money. Marcy stays out of this.”

Daily and Castillo exchanged glances as Castillo shrugged and said, “Have it your way, Mr. Perone.”

“What are the chances of finally keeping Montes in jail this time?” Marcy asked. “From what I hear, he’s been deported five times and keeps returning. And this time, all we’re dealing with is a small amount of fentanyl in comparison to bigger busts in the city, which have gone nowhere?”

Castillo looked at Marcy and sighed. “Mrs. Mancuso, we’ve been fighting that battle with the city and state for a long time. We catch them, and they release them. All we can do is our job; after that, we have no control.”

“Wait a second,” I said.
